From the South Whidbey Record:

Oasis for Animals is looking for someone who wants to be a part of history and help the animal kingdom, too.

Oasis for Animals plans to honor the 100th cat that is spayed or neutered as part of its Spay Day program this year. The last eligible Spay Day will be November 2.

The prize will be awarded that morning, when the 100th cat arrives. The fortunate feline will receive its own brand new cat carrier, and its owner will receive an Oasis T-shirt. The $15 spay/neuter fee will also be refunded to the owner.

The final Spay Day will wrap up a busy year for the no-kill animal rescue organization in Langley. This summer, Oasis for Animals hosted four special events to encourage owners to get their felines fixed.

"Our goal was to have 100 pet cats safely spayed or neutered within six months and we're almost there," said Jean Favini, president of Oasis for Animals. "So far, 83 pet cats have been spayed or neutered. Our nest Spay Day will be on Nov. 2, and that will take us past the 100 mark."

Program participants said the Spay Day program was an inexpensive and professional experience. "We heard of Oasis from a neighbor who said that it was a great service to the community, at a great price," said Pat McVay, Whidbey's well-known wood sculptor. "Our son Reilly has a 5-month old boy-cat that he named Chucky Sue. Before his kitty got interested in romance, we contacted Oasis. Their love for animals just pours out of them," he said. "Everyone was very caring and professional."

McVay described the experience. "We dropped off our kitty in the morning, and in the afternoon he was back and had been vaccinated, neutered, and treated for fleas -- all for $30. At that price, we were able to donate a little extra to help someone else. Our kitty even got a tiny tattoo. I have been trying to read it and I think that it says 'Mom.'"
